SIMILARITIES:

  • Both prokaryotic and eukaryotic translation processes use mRNA as a template.

DIFFERENCES:

PROKARYOTIC TRANSLATION:

  • Prokaryotic transcription and translation are simultaneous processes.
  • Prokaryotic translation occurs in 70S ribosomes in the cytoplasm.
  • Prokaryotic translation is a faster process (adds 20 amino acids/second)
  • Shine-Dalgarno sequence is found in the 5′ UTR, located 8-10 nucleotides upstream to the start codon.
  • Cap- independent initiation.

EUKARYOTIC TRANSLATION:

  • Eukaryotic transcription and translation are discontinuous processes.
  • Eukaryotic translation performed by the 80S ribosomes attached with the ER.
  • Eukaryotic translation is a slower process (adds a single amino acid /second)
  • Kozak sequence is found in the 5′ UTR, a few nucleotides upstream to the start codon.
  • Both cap-dependent and cap-independent initiation.
